Two letters written by Henry Atkinson to Andrew Jackson at Nashville, Tennessee, regarding progress of Atkinson's first expedition to the mouth of the Yellowstone River. A copy of an ALS, dated at Cantonment Martin, Sep 6, 1819, reports delays in the progress of steamboats on the Missouri River in reaching Council Bluffs. Enclosed is a copy of a letter from Major Thomas Biddle to Atkinson, dated at Kansas Town, Aug 24, 1819, describing a raid by Pawnee Indians on his party while on the way to join Atkinson's expedition. Atkinson informs Jackson of his subsequent order to Benjamin O'Fallon to suspend trade with the Pawnees. The letter and enclosure are copied in an unidentified hand. An ALS, dated at Council Bluffs, June 19, 1820, briefly reports condition of troops, flooding of crops on the Missouri River, and an attack by Sauk Indians. Atkinson refers to an enclosed copy of a report by Captain Matthew J. Magee, regarding his pursuit of the Sauks. This enclosure is not present.
